IF THERE IS A GOD

If there is a God, how come so much evil exist in this world? If God is all powerful, why doesn’t He stop all the hunger, fighting, killing, bitterness and many more? Why is there so much pain and chaos in this world? Why does God sit on His throne while man toil day and night to solve issues of crime and lack in our society? Why can’t God do His Job?

Of course ordinarily these are rational questions that stem from experience, observation, good sense of justice/ judgment and a kind desire for a better society. These questions demand satisfying answers and perhaps to truly answer them, we have to first know the Will of God for man on earth. Is God happy when the very people He created suffer? What are His principles or rule of life? Are we really following them? Let’s at least try to know God and compare His desires to ours? Maybe we did try to grasp a bit of light yah?

From the Christian point of view:

Firstly, God’s Will for us is that we be where He is and continually fellowship with Him. This is found in Genesis 1: 26 till the end. God’s dwelling place is beautiful and there is no filthiness in it.

It means that if we all desire to be where God is like He desires to be with us, the filthiness we often complain of in our society will not exist in the first place. The intent is to be more like the person you spend most of your time with and the very nature of God is Good, clean and beautiful. But the greed of man made him fall to the deception which brought about separation with God in the first place. We cannot love God and love the devil concurrently. He doesn’t want such relationship and quite frankly, non of us would want such relationship with our earthly friends.

Secondly, Man’s desire is to rule himself and others as opposed to be ruled by God. Lets take practical examples; many of us don’t want to be told who to be with or have sex with? We want to be left to our own choice isn’t it so? Whereas God’s desire for us is to sexual companionship within godly marriages Gen 2:24, Heb 13:4, Gal 5:19, Eph 5:3 & 33. Today many relationships are built on fornication and adultery which has brought about cases of abortion, abandoned children and failed marriages.

What of Greed? God hates greed Prov 15:27, 1Tim 6:10, Heb 13:5 but man is so greedy he wants more than his meat. We see it in our politicians today whose leadership is to acquire wealth and exploit nations instead of serving the people they have been called to lead. The actions of these leaders breed many rebels we so hate today. We have a lot of hungry people in our society. Only few jobs are no longer gotten on merit these days. You have to know someone who knows somebody. It so sad that many lazy vision-less people seat on crucial positions.

What of forgiveness and revenge? God’s desire is that we forgive while He does the judgement but man wants revenge at all cost Eph 4: 31-32. We most a times want instant revenge because we don’t truly believe that God will handle it the way we see fit. There are many murder cases that are as a result of revenge. The list goes on.

Our actions create the mess we hate today and asking God to clean up our dirty actions in the way we want will require that we give up our free will. Free will is a gift from God and truly speaking, many people will distaste a ruler that imposes him or herself on others. God does not want to force our obedience, He wants us to make the choice to obey Him Gal 5:14, Joshua 24:15.

Freedom without caution is detrimental or isn’t it? According to Mortimer Adler “True freedom is impossible without a mind free by discipline”.

If everybody should exercise caution within their free will would this world not be a better place? If we acted in Love like our creator towards us, would this world not be a better place? We lie, we steal, we act bitter towards people, we use derogatory terms, we choose to be stingy, greedy and live immorally. We just want to live our lives the way that seem fit to us. Either within the law or regardless of the law.

Should the question remain “If there is a good God why so much hate, pain, evil, hunger etc?” or should the question be “Why have we chosen to leave a good God and His ways for our’s? Are our actions towards ourselves right? what of our thoughts? our speech? Can man really rule himself and others without God? Why should we point accusing fingers toward a God that respects our free will and at the same time sent His son Jesus Christ to redeem us from our fall and bring us closer to Him?

  1. These questions are essentially the philosophical crux of religion – and I think you do a great job grappling with them! Thanks for sharing 🙂
